HOW DID YOU DO THAT?

Magic really only exists in the mind of the spectator for the second or two, that the actual effect or trick takes place. The value of a great magic trick is not a trick at all, it is the art of interpreting the ancient art. The success of a trick relies on the words spoken, psychology, presentation and details.

HISTORY DATING BACK TO THE 1980'S

In 1980, I was 6 years old when my parents bought me a Fisher Price Magic Kit for Christmas. I can remember being hooked right away. I do not remember if it was the “secrets” to the tricks or the interaction with the spectators that kept me entertained. My Childhood Magic Kit Either way, I loved learning the art of magic. My mom would take me to the McCracken County Library to dig through the magic books. I started performing strong slight of hand effects when I was 15. My passion seemed to come from using everyday items around the house that were made to be “magical.”

At the age of 15, while in Florida on Spring Break we visited a local magic store. The magician behind the counter performed a coin trick for me that I will never forget. He borrowed four American half dollars and put them in his left hand. I My Classic Coin Magic Bookwatched as one coin at a time vanished and reappeared in his right hand. (see the video of that exact trick here) I was blown away! I asked him which trick I needed to buy. The magician explained that the some of the best magic is found in books. He introduced me to a classic textbook that I still reference. I always go back to my library of books to improve upon my art.

WHAT'S MAGICAL TO ME

My interpretation of the art does not include boxes with stars painted on the side or scantily clad women hopping from one box to the other. Close-up magic is a “purist” kind of magic. There are few things as magical as seeing something impossible happen to ordinary everyday items. My working show consists of effect with coins, cards, rope, balls, coffee mugs and money. The challenge for me is to entertain an audience with items that are in our daily lives.
